Elderly victim in murder probe suffered 'traumatic injuries'

The inquest into the death of a grandmother has heard that she died of "traumatic injuries". The death of Margaret Barnes, 71, of Marine Parade sparked a murder investigation after emergency services were called to a property on the same street on Sunday, July 10.

Officers received a call at 10.56pm on Sunday July 10 regarding a woman in a "distressed state" on Marine Parade, Barmouth. Police attended the scene with paramedics however she passed away at 2.01am. Detectives said her death was being treated as suspicious and an investigation was launched.

North Wales Live reports that the inquest, which opened in Caernarfon on Wednesday, heard she was formally identified by her husband, Raymond Barnes. David Redfern, 45, from Barmouth, has since been charged with Mrs Barnes' murder,

Sarah Riley, assistant coroner for north west Wales opened the inquest on Wednesday, August 10. A postmortem was conducted by pathologist Dr Brian Rogers on July 12, and found Mrs Barnes died of "traumatic injuries."

Redfern appeared at Caernarfon Crown Court on August 8. A trial is expected to begin in March 2023. The full inquest was adjourned to a later date.

Following her death, Margaret's famil y released the following tribute : "Margaret was a devoted wife, and the best mother, grandmother and sister anyone could ask for. She always had a smile on her face and was always caring, loving and willing to help anyone especially her family who she cherished.

"She has been cruelly taken from us far too early. She will be sorely missed and we can honestly say that our lives without her will never be the same again.’"
