Residents die during flu outbreak at Tasmanian nursing home

A number of deaths have been confirmed at a Tasmanian nursing home during an influenza outbreak, the ABC can reveal.

The fatalities happened at the Strathdevon aged care facility in Latrobe, near Devonport, in Tasmania's north-west, which is run by Uniting AgeWell, an organisation of the Uniting Church in Australia.

The deaths at Strathdevon came after confirmation of the deaths of seven elderly residents at St John's Retirement Village in Wangaratta, in Victoria, which is run by the Anglican Church, during an influenza outbreak.

In a statement released on Friday night, a spokeswoman from Uniting AgeWell confirmed "there was an influenza A outbreak at Strathdevon from August 9 to 30 which was reported to Public Health and managed according to State Health Department infection control guidelines".

"All health, hygiene and safety precautions were taken to minimise the spread of infection during that time and appropriate care for those affected," the statement read.

"Whilst there were some deaths during that period, we have received no confirmation that they were as a direct result of influenza A."

When asked to confirm the exact number of people who died during the outbreak, Uniting AgeWell did not respond to the ABC's enquiries by publishing deadline.

A government spokesperson said it was "hard contacting people on a Friday night" for an official response.
