Elderly pedestrian dead after horror crash in Co Tipperary

An elderly man has died after being hit by a car on Sunday evening in Co Tipperary.

Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene of the injured pedestrian at around 5:50 pm, and quickly transferred him to Cork University Hospital where he has since passed away.

The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident that occurred on Castle Street in Cahir was unharmed according to officers.

The road remains closed this morning to allow for a technical examination of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigators, but local diversions are in place.

Gardaí are now appealing for any witnesses to come forward, particularly road users with video footage (including dash cam).

In a statement released this morning officers confirmed: “Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fatal road traffic collision on Castle Street in Cahir, Co.Tipperary yesterday evening, 9th January 2022.

“It is believed the collision occurred at approximately 5.50 pm and involved a car and pedestrian.

“The pedestrian, a man aged in his 70s, was taken to Cork University Hospital where he has since passed away. The local coroner has been notified and a post-mortem will take place in due course.

“The driver of the car was unharmed.

“Castle Street in Cahir remains closed this morning to allow for a technical examination of the scene by Forensic Collision Investigators. Local diversions are in place.”
