Elderly patients in West Lothian receive letters but are asked to travel outside of their local area to get vaccine jabs

Concern has been raised for elderly residents in West Lothian having to travel to receive their vaccine jabs.

Residents aged between 70-79 are next in line for vaccination and are due to receive letters with their appointments from today (January 25) onwards.

MSP Neil Findlay spoke to The Courier this morning and said he had been contacted by a number of constituents.

He says frail patients are being asked to travel from Fauldhouse to Broxburn because their is no facility for vaccination in their area as of yet.

The Courier was also contacted by a concerned woman who says her 72-year-old husband was asked to travel from Livingston to Edinburgh.

We have a copy of the letter sent by Public Health Scotland to the man in Eliburn inviting him to come to Edinburgh International Conference Centre at the start of February for the first dose.

NHS Lothian had previously said that patients in West Lothian would have their jabs at the purpose-built mass vaccination centre in Bathgate.

A Scottish Government spokesperson said: “We continue to strongly urge everyone in the 70-79 age group to check all their post in the coming weeks and take up the offer of the vaccine when it is received.”

At her briefing this afternoon, Ms Sturgeon said: “It’s in your interests, and obviously, everybody else’s interests, for you to accept the appointment and get vaccinated as soon as possible.

“Today therefore marks a further important milestone in a vaccination programme which is making good progress and we remain on track to vaccinate everybody who is over the age of 70 by the middle of February.”
