SA Police say an elderly man who was found two days after he was reported missing north of Adelaide has died in hospital.

The 90-year-old, named by police only as Jeff, was found this morning on the Northern Expressway at Ward Belt.

Police had issued a public appeal to help find Jeff, who was last seen at 5pm on Wednesday on Kentish Road in Gawler Belt.

Jeff's family and authorities had held concerns for his welfare, believing he may have become disoriented.

Police and State Emergency Service crews had searched near the Northern Expressway at Gawler Belt after he was sighted in the area in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Police said Jeff was found on Thursday morning and he was understood to have been in a drain or ditch for a period of time.

The South Australian Ambulance Service said the man was "very unwell" when crews attended.

He was taken to Lyell McEwin Hospital, where he later died.
