Elderly man who lay dead in his Cork home for seven months named as 85-year-old Ritchie Scanlan

A pensioner who was found dead in his home seven months after he passed away has been named as Ritchie Scanlan.

The body of Mr Scanlan, 85, was discovered at his home in Madden's Buildings, Blackpool in Co Cork after neighbours became concerned for his wellbeing.

Neighbours described Mr Scanlan as a quiet man who was well liked but “kept himself to himself”, Cork Beo reports.

His body was taken to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem examination will now be carried out however Gardai said that his death is not being treated as suspicious.

He is survived by his sister Joan, sister-in law Pauline and his extended family.

Mr Scanlan will be reposing at Coburg Street Funeral home at 6pm on Tuesday evening and his funeral mass will take place at 11am on Wednesday at the Church of The Annunciation, Blackpool.

One Mr Scanlan’s neighbours remarked that it was very sad that the man had passed away and had been there for many months, with the woman also saying that more needed to be done to care for the elderly.

This is the second such case in the city in just over a year after a man in his seventies was found in his apartment last May, he had been dead for six months.

Pensioners who feel vulnerable in her home can avail of a confidential helpline which is run by Third Age, a not for profit agency.

The Senior Helpline is open 365 days a year from 10am-10pm and is available on the number 1800 90 45 91.

There are also personal alarms available free of charge for 12 months but has a monitoring fee after one year of around €60 to €90 a year.
