Elderly man taken to hospital following three-vehicle crash on A69

An elderly man was taken to hospital after a three-vehicle crashed on the A69.

The man was found unconscious following the collision at around 1.30pm on Sunday, which closed a section of the road in both directions between Haltwhistle and Chesterwood , close to the junction with Bardon Mill.

A spokesman from the North East Ambulance Service said he was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary by ambulance.

He said: "Just after 1.35pm on the eastbound carriageway of the A69, just before the Bardon Mill junction, there was an RTC involving a number of vehicles.

"One unconscious patient, an elderly male, was taken to Royal Victoria Infirmary A&E by road ambulance."

The man's condition is not yet know.

The road was closed for around two hours causing traffic to back up in both directions, while officers at the scene put diversions in place.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "We got the report just before 1:45pm of a three-vehicle RTC. The road was closed in both directions and diversions were put in place."

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they attended to make sure the affected vehicles were in a safe condition.
