An elderly man was rushed to hospital fighting for life yesterday after he was allegedly punched and then hit his head on the ground in Adelaide's CBD, police have said.

The 89-year-old was walking along Grote Street early yesterday afternoon when he was allegedly attacked by a 33-year-old man.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene about 1:00pm.

The victim, from West Croydon, was rushed to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with a serious head injury.

He was still listed as being in a critical but stable condition this afternoon.

Police said the man was punched, causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head.

The man's alleged attacker was arrested at the scene.

He faced the Adelaide Magistrates Court this afternoon and will appear again tomorrow.

Police have asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

CCTV from a local business shows the alleged perpetrator stumbling on Grote Street before the assault.

Local business owners said they were shocked by the incident.

"Certainly it's a bit alarming to hear that something happened during the day," Jim Apostolou said.

"Not good at all, not at that age," Rocco Spano added.

"He could have just been minding his own business walking past and then 'bang'."
