An elderly man has been struck and killed by a popular tourist train near a South Australian beach.

The pedestrian died at the scene after he was hit by the Cockle Train at Hayborough Beach, just north of Victor Harbor, on Thursday afternoon.

The train, operated by SteamRanger Heritage Railway, travels on the oldest steel-railed railway in Australia dating back to 1854 and is just metres from the beach.

All remaining Thursday services were cancelled.

The train driver is assisting police and passengers were removed from the crash scene on buses.

"SteamRanger's first priority is to look after the welfare of our customers and train crew," the company's customer services manager Steven Richardson said in a statement.

"The Cockle Train will remain on site until SAPOL and the Office of National Rail Safety Regulator representatives attend the incident site."

An announcement about Friday's train services will be posted on the company's website and Facebook page on Thursday evening, Mr Richardson said.
