Elderly man shot with crossbow while fixing his satellite dish dies from his injuries

A pensioner shot through his arm and upper body with a crossbow has died from his injuries, police have said.

Gerald Corrigan suffered "horrendous injuries" after he was shot outside his home in South Stack Road in Holyhead on Good Friday.

The 74-year-old retired lecturer died on Saturday morning, May 11, as police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Mr Corrigan worked as a lecturer in photography and video in Lancashire before retiring to Anglesey more than 20 years ago. He had a keen interest in nature.

A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "Despite the best efforts of paramedics and the medical staff who have treated Gerald Corrigan, he has tragically died this morning as a result of the horrendous injuries he sustained after being shot with a crossbow bolt outside his home address by South Stack Road, Holyhead, early on Friday morning, April 19."

Mr Corrigan was fixing a satellite dish outside his home at around 2:24am when he was shot at with a crossbow bolt. He was rushed to Royal Stoke University in Hospital in Staffordshire in a critical condition.

It is still unknown who discharged the weapon but at the time, police said his home was in an "extremely remote" location and that if the weapon was discharged accidentally, the person who had done so would be "significantly traumatised".

DCI Brian Kearney said: "This is a truly shocking case and our thoughts are with Gerald's family and friends at this very sad time.

"The family continue to be supported by specially trained family liaison officers."

Officers are still searching for the person who may have released the crossbow, and say they are conducting an "impartial search for the truth".

Anyone who has any information relating to the investigation should contact Llangefni CID on 101 and quote reference number X052857.
