An elderly man killed in a tragic car crash overnight has been named locally.
Larry Desmond, in his 80s, sadly passed away in a single car collision around midnight on Tuesday in Aherla, Co Cork.
It is believed his vehicle may have slid off the road in icy conditions, Cork Beo reports.
Funeral arrangements will be listed on RIP.ie this evening following the well-known local's passing.
Gardai are looking into the crash and released a statement this morning confirming there had been a fatality on the road.
A garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí are investigating a single vehicle fatal road traffic collision that occurred in the Kilbonane area of Aherla, Co. Cork, overnight between 16/12/19 - 17/12/19.
"A man in his 80s was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem will take place.
"The road remains closed this morning for a forensic examination.
"Gardaí are appealing for anyone with information, particularly any road users who travelled in the area between 9pm on 16/12/19 - 2:30am on 17/12/19 who may have dash cam footage, to contact Gardaí in Macroom on 026 20590 or the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111."
This is the second tragedy on Cork roads in recent days after young man Brendan O'Connor passed away in the Dublin Pike area, on the northside of Cork city, at the weekend.
Councillor Kenneth O'Flynn told Cork Beo: "Both myself and the community are extremely saddened by this. The family are well-liked and respected in the community.
"We need a full re-examining of the road network in the area. I am lobbying with my fellow councillors to slow down traffic in the area.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the family and the community at this time."
