Elderly man killed after being hit by car while cycling in Dublin as Gardai appeal for witnesses

A man in his 80s has been killed after he was struck by a car while out cycling on Monday.

Shortly before 1pm, Gardai responded to a call about the collision on the Killeen Road in Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.

The car and bicycle collided, with the cyclist being pronounced dead at the scene.

Gardai say that his body was taken to Dublin City Morgue where a post-mortem will now take place in due course. The driver of the car was unharmed.

Diversions were in place for some time to allow for a technical examination by Forensic Collision Investigators. The road has now fully re-opened.

A spokesperson said: "Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to this collision. Gardaí are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling on the Killeen Road at this time, to make this footage available to them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Ballyfermot Garda Station on 01 666 7200, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
