Elderly man in 'critical but stable' condition in hospital following crash in Sunderland

An elderly man remains in a critical condition following a collision in Sunderland.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the one-vehicle collision in the Leechmere Road area just after 3.30pm on Monday.

It was reported that a Renault Megane was seen driving south east along Essen Way before it drove on to the roundabout and crashed into "street furniture" before coming to a stop.

Police officers carried out CPR on the 76-year-old driver who was then taken to hospital by paramedics.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched a specialist paramedic, a double-crewed ambulance and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance.

The man's injuries were said to be life-threatening.

On Tuesday, Northumbria Police confirmed that the man remained in a "critical but stable" condition in hospital.

The force are now appealing for witnesses to this incident and particularly anyone who might have dash cam footage.

Anyone who has information should go to the ‘Report an Incident’ section of the Northumbria Police website or call 101, quoting log 611 191020.
