Elderly man impaled on railing in Calverley rescued by firefighters

Emergency services were called to Calverley, Pudsey, after an elderly man was impaled on a railing.

A specialist fire crew assisted paramedics at the incident on Woodhall Street, Calverley, Pudsey, at around 9am this morning (December 31).

The elderly man, in his eighties, was found impaled on a railing and suffered injuries to his face. His condition is not known at this time.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service dispatched its Technical Rescue Unit from Cleckheaton as well as crews from Stanningley, Rawdon and Bradford following a request from Yorkshire Ambulance Service.

The road was briefly closed by West Yorkshire Police while firefighters worked to free him. The road has now reopened but a scene remains in place.

Mark Thompson, crew commander at WYFRS, said the man was taken to Leeds General Infirmary by ambulance.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said following a call at 8.47am, the Yorkshire Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene, as well as an ambulance, two rapid response vehicles and the Hazardous Area Response Team.

However, the air ambulance was not needed and the man was taken to LGI by road ambulance.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 9.01am today (31/12) police were contacted by the fire service who were attending an incident in Woodhall Road, Calverley, where a man in his eighties had become impaled on railings.

"He was removed by firefighters and ambulance staff and taken to hospital for emergency treatment.

"The incident is being treated as an accident. The road has reopened but a scene remains in place pending updates on his condition."
