Elderly man hospitalised following fire near Yass

A man has been seriously injured after a house fire near Yass overnight.

Eight occupants were able to escape the Wallaroo home when fire broke out, however, an 83-year-old man suffered burns and smoke inhalation in the blaze.

The elderly man was treated at the scene before being transported to Canberra Hospital.

Emergency services were called to the property in Gooromon Ponds Road, approximately 40 kilometres south of Yass, about 1am on Sunday.

Fire and Rescue NSW, ACT Fire and Rescue, and Wallaroo Rural Fire Service worked to control the blaze but the home was destroyed.

A crime scene had since been established and an investigation was now under way.
