A man has been charged following an alleged hit-and-run in Queensland that resulted in the death of an elderly man.

Police will allege that an 84-year-old River Heads man was riding a mobility scooter on Ariadne St, River Heads when he was struck by a green sedan about 2.30pm on Friday.

The alleged driver of the sedan, a 25-year-old Pialba man, fled the scene with the damaged vehicle and was arrested by police three hours later following a search.

The 84-year-old was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The alleged driver was charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death, fail to remain at scene with callous disregard and drive unlicensed and is due to appear in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on December 16.

Any witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have dash-cam footage of the green sedan, are urged to contact police or Crime Stoppers.
