An elderly man has been arrested on suspicion of creating 80 pieces of “extremely offensive” anti-Muslim graffiti in Sussex.

Sussex Police said a 76-year-old man has been arrested after dozens of offensive messages were scrawled in Hove since November 2018.

The graffiti was written in Arabic and Persian, the force said, they gave no further details about the slogans daubed on walls.

Brighton and Hove City Council said it cleaned the words from buildings as soon as they were alerted.

In a statement, police said: “A man has been arrested in connection with offensive graffiti in Hove.

“A 76-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of using threatening, abusive or insulting words to stir up racial hatred and remains in custody.”

The man has since been bailed.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police online quoting serial 819 of 23/06.
