A woman in her 80s in Kanagawa Prefecture has become Japan's first recorded fatality due to the COVID19 coronavirus, the health minister has announced.
According to the ministry, the woman had complained of malaise since Jan. 22, and on Feb. 1 she was diagnosed with pneumonia.
On Wednesday her condition deteriorated, and she died on Thursday.
After her death, tests confirmed that she had been infected with the coronavirus.
Meanwhile a taxi driver in his 70s who lives in Tokyo was also found to be infected.
