Surplus business computers are being given to the elderly to help them to stay connected in self-isolation during the coronavirus outbreak.

Camden-based social enterprise SocialBox.Biz is providing hundreds of repurposed laptops donated by businesses.

It is also teaching the elderly how to communicate with families and friends online, contact services and order food.

Organisers say many more are needed to keep up with demand during the pandemic.

It comes after the Health Secretary confirmed that 560,000 people have signed up as part of an NHS volunteer army to help those most at risk of Covid-19.

Those who have volunteered will help the NHS with shopping, the delivery of medicines and supporting those who are shielded to protect their own health

Matt Hancock said the numbers were “fantastic” and invited more to join the effort.
