Elderly fan causes horror cycling crash after driving mobility scooter into peloton

An elderly fan on a mobility scooter caused a horror crash at a cycling race.

Footage from the Saarland Trofeo race in Germany shows dozens of young cyclists speeding past a crowd of onlookers, as a pensioner edges their scooter forwards.

Dutch athlete, Paul Vriesma, 17, is violently thrown off his bike after crashing into the vehicle, before hitting the ground.

Other cyclists can be seen lying on the ground moments later, following a pile-up.

“Fortunately, the riders involved escaped without serious injuries despite some spectacular crashes”, said the fan who shared the footage.

Responding to the crash, Vriesma wrote online: “Sad to have to DNF (Did not finish) this Saarland Trofeo this way due to an old lady who was just living in her own world.”
