Elderly Edinburgh man 'left with bruised ribs' after falling over cycle lane bollard

An Edinburgh resident is understood to have been injured after falling over a bollard base next to a pedestrian access way.

Councillor Scott Arthur, who represents the local community of Colinton, Oxgangs and Fairmilehead, said the elderly man tripped over the cycle lane defender when crossing the road.

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Cllr Arthur told how the pedestrian was walking along Buckstone Terrace when he came into contact with the bollard and fell over.

He is understood to have been left with minor injuries including bruised ribs. His son got in touch with the councillor to complain about the positioning of the bollard near to a pedestrian access way.

Cllr Arthur posted a photo online showing a gap in the wall leading from a restaurant directly opposite the bollard, sparking fears people that people were walking in the dark might not spot the bollard.

The councillor said two other locals have contacted him since he posted the image online having had similar experiences at the same spot.

In the post, Cllr Arthur writes: "Following an accident a few days ago involving a pedestrian, the Council have agreed to remove the bollard adjacent to Charwood on Buckstone Terrace."

This post was met with positive responses, with one resident stating: "I tripped over that one the last time I was there. Delighted it will be going."

The restaurant adjacent to the bollard, Charwood, also commented on the councillor's post, saying: "That's good news, we wish they could all be removed."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live, Cllr Arthur said: "Three local residents have been in touch with me to report accidents regarding this bollard on Buckstone Terrace.

"I am grateful to the City of Edinburgh Council for their prompt response following my request, and they have agreed to remove the bollard.

"However, I do believe that if the council had consulted the local community before installing these cycle lane defenders, this could have been avoided."

A Council spokesperson confirmed that two cycle lane defenders will be removed in response to concerns around their positioning in front of pedestrian access to the restaurant.
