Pensioners were last night looking forward to the thought of walking up the road again, as Covid-19 restrictions ease today.
While the country remains in lockdown, small changes are about to make a big difference for those over 70.
Since March 27, they have been “cocooning” in their homes in an effort to protect them from the coronavirus.
As part of these restrictions, elderly members of the public have had to stay at home and have only been allowed out to their gardens.
Pam Collum, 80, from Balbriggan, Co Dublin, said she is looking forward to walking to her local church today. She added: “I’m looking forward to going out for a walk and getting a bit of fresh air.
“I’ll walk to the church and light a few candles. It will be nice to see the town again.”
Martin Carey, from Balbriggan, has been cocooning since March 27, as he and his wife Maeve are both in their 80s.
He said: “I’ll go for two walks but will keep away from everybody.
“I’ll go up the estate, out on to the main road and back down again.
“It’s been tough, to tell you the truth.
“Mentally, it’s very hard. Physically it’s OK but you don’t know what day it is – you have to look at the paper to see what day it is.”
