Elderly driver taken to hospital after car crashes through display board in Monkseaton

An elderly driver has been taken to hospital after a car crashed through a display board in Monskeaton.

Emergency services were called to the incident after the silver car crashed through the community display board on Front Street at just before 2pm on Tuesday.

Paramedics treated the woman, who is in her 80s, at the scene before she was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital by ambulance.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 2.15pm today (Tuesday) we were alerted by the ambulance service to a one-vehicle collision on Front Street, Monkseaton.

“Emergency services attended and the driver – a woman in her 80s – received treatment by paramedics at the scene. Nobody else was injured.”

Pictures of the incident show the smashed remnants of the blue community board, which stood outside Kelly's DIY.

A spokesperson from North East Ambulance Service confirmed that they were called to the area at about 1.59pm.

They added: "We tansported a female patient in her 80s to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital."
