Elderly driver 'suffered medical episode' before crashing head on into Land Rover on Leeds road

An elderly driver is thought to have suffered a medical episode at the wheel moments before crashing head-on into a Land Rover on a Leeds road.

The man, aged 80, suffered serious chest injuries in the collision yesterday afternoon.

At around 12.24pm he was driving a Toyota Yaris on Carr Road in Calverley when he collided with the Land Rover Discovery, which was travelling in the opposite direction.

The Yaris driver received serious chest injuries and was transported to Leeds General Infirmary for treatment. He is currently in a stable condition.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "It is believed he suffered a medical episode at the wheel."

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene but the elderly man did not need to be cut free of his vehicle and had in face already got out of the car when firefighters arrived.

The 54-year-old male driver and 47-year-old female passenger in the Land Rover were not seriously injured.

Police would like to speak to any witnesses to the incident or anyone with dashcam footage.

They should contact the non-emergency number 101.
