Elderly dog snatched from owner and dragged down street by moped gang

A dog has been dragged down the street by a gang on mopeds, after they ripped the lead from her owner's hands.

The sickening act caused the pet to have serious injuries and she needed to be taken to the vets by her concerned owner.

Police say three "callous youths" drove the moped at the woman in her 60s outside a parade of shops at around 5.10pm on Wednesday, May 1.

They then grabbed the lead and drove away pulling the dog behind them.

Police  are appealing for anyone who saw three youths riding on a black moped in Edinburgh Drive, Staines to contact them.

Spelthorne Borough Commander Maxine Cilia said: “These callous youths are believed to have driven the moped deliberately at the woman and her dog.

"The dog has then been dragged along the road and has suffered serious injuries as a result.

"We would like to appeal to anyone with any information, especially if you know who was responsible, to come forward as a matter of urgency.”

News of the incident was posted on Facebook and triggered an outpouring of support from the community, with some offering to pay the dog owner’s vet bill.

Others reacted in horror, with Marie Carvalho saying: “This has made me feel physically sick and ashamed to be part of the world we live in today. I do not understand how people can do this kind of thing.”

And Nela Correia has called for the gang members’ parents to pay for the cost of the dog’s treatment.

“These youngsters must get caught and be punished, severely enough to make them and any others think twice about engaging in such atrocities,” she wrote. “Their parents must pay up! Parents are 100% responsible for their kids up to age 18!!”

Anyone with any information, CCTV or dashcam footage, should call police on 101.
