An elderly couple who left their home for the first time in more than two months to drive 20 minutes to the coast have received vile abuse.
Marion and Jock Robertson found the handwritten letter posted through their letterbox after returning from a short walk along the nearby seafront on Wednesday.
The married couple told Devon Live the note was both "intimidating" and "abusive", and it has left their family fuming.
Marion 79, and Jock 80, have not been into contact with loved ones for 10 weeks, even celebrating their 60th anniversary alone in lockdown. They drove just 20 minutes from their home in Exmouth, Devon, to the coast.
The couple’s granddaughter, Donna Gover, said: “My nan rang me when she found the letter and told me about it.
“I went and picked the letter up thinking it might be an accident card that someone had posted through the wrong door during lockdown."
“But no, it’s just a nasty, spiteful letter.
"The letter is really poorly written and doesn't make much sense."
Although the letter is addressed to ‘Joan’, Donna believes that the letter is still meant for her grandparents.
Donna added: “We’ve made the assumption it must be a neighbour as someone in the area must have seen they had gone out.
“Whoever wrote this clearly knows enough about them to know roughly what my grandparents name is.
"The whole thing is quite disgusting."
Donna, 37, continued: "My grandad is particularly well-known and outgoing. He has really struggled with lockdown because of his outgoing character.
"I am not saying they are worse off than anybody else, but to receive a letter like this is just not needed."
She took to social media to alert fellow residents in Exmouth of the distress.
The social media post which has received just under 400 comments, is flooded with "overwhelming support."
Donna adds: "The support we have received is amazing.
"A bunch of us are going to show our support for my grandparents as well as the NHS by clapping along their street.
"We want to show them they were doing nothing wrong in the first place."
