Elderly couple left with hole in bathroom roof for months after leak

An elderly couple are having to shower and go to the toilet in the dark after a leak caused a gaping hole in their bathroom ceiling which destroyed the lighting.

Former sock factory workers, Lily, 72, and Anthony Shaw, 75, of Stock Well in Bulwell, have been in an ongoing battle with Nottingham City Homes (NCH) since May.

Mr Shaw is recovering from a stroke and is not in the best of health.

Mrs Shaw said: "We had a leak in the bathroom overnight because of the heavy rain in May. It came through the ceiling and electric lights.

"We phoned up and they came out the same day but could not do anything because they had to go onto the roof and it was still raining.

"They came back a couple of weeks later when it was dry and could not find anything wrong.

"They came back again and cemented around where the leak was, but I have been waiting for them to finish the job. There is a hole in the ceiling and I have been waiting since May.

"There are no lights in the bathroom and we have to had a shower in the dark.

"It is not very nice. I said to them 'would you like to shower and have bits from the loft insulation dropping down on you every day?'

"But they say it is not an emergency.

"It is very stressful. I have been phoning them every day since May."

The hole has now been boarded up to stop debris falling on them, but it has still left the frustrated couple with no electricity in the bathroom.

Their concerned granddaughter, Samantha Greensmith, 25, added: "It has been very stressful for them. It has not been nice to see them like that at all, especially with my granddad's health problems.

"It is a really big hole. They should not have to live like this. I can't believe they have not sorted this out quickly."

Nottingham City Homes have apologised to the couple stating: "We visited the property on August 8 to carry out a ceiling repair in the bathroom, but the nature of the ceiling finish meant that  it would be impossible to match, so we plan to replace the entire ceiling.

"We have carried out a temporary repair, and we appreciate that the situation is not ideal for Mr and Mrs Shaw.

"We are making this a priority, and will be out to the property on Tuesday to complete the works."
