Elderly couple crash through wall into locked library

An elderly couple found themselves locked in a library after the car they were travelling in smashed through a wall.

The car became wedged in the building after the crash in the New Forest, Hants., sent brickwork, shelves and library books across the floor.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service (HIWFRS) confirmed that it sent a crew from Hardley were sent to the incident at Hythe Library shortly after 11.15am on Sunday, October 17.

Both occupants of the vehicle were able to release themselves from the wreckage, finding themselves locked in the locked building.

"Crews after using the tirfor [hoist] to stabilise the car, tunnelled through to give [Immediate Emergency Care] to the casualties then forced entry to get them out", a spokesperson for the service said.

Hampshire Constabulary said no arrests were made.

A HIWFRS spokesperson said: "A road traffic collision in a Hythe car park resulted in a car going through the wall of a library.

"Hardley firefighters were called at 11:14 this morning (17 October) to the incident at the library on Pylewell Road.

"Two casualties who were in the car were able to exit the vehicle, but then found themselves locked within the library building.

"The HIWFRS crew made entry into the building and led the casualties to safety before providing them with Immediate Emergency Care.

"The firefighters handed the casualties over to South Central Ambulance Service paramedics, before making the scene safe by stabilising the vehicle."
