Elastic thinking - school furniture revisited

So many new school designs emphasise the importance of flexible spaces to enable students to make the most of technology and to support personalised learning. Which is fine as long as the furniture is equally flexible when you are folding back the room dividers.

When Nick Topliss, managing director of specialist education interiors company Isis Concepts, went to collect his daughter from primary school, he was shocked at how difficult it was for teachers to shift heavy classroom tables.

So he asked his daughter what she thought, and the result is a lightweight table system on wheels.

"We designed a new table that is a bit like a supermarket trolley. It has two small wheels in front and they can nest together," he says. "All the kids have to do to move them is to lift and push."

Nesting is also key to Torsion on the Go!, the new chair from KI which features an oversized tablet arm to take a laptop. It is complemented by lightweight tables called Enlite and Hurry Up. KI also produces ergonomic and soft seating for break-out areas.
