Elastic band wrapped tightly around dog's head as callous Scots owner caged

A Scots owner has been caged after subjecting a poor pup to “unimaginable pain and suffering.”

Kevin Hunter, from Larkhall, was jailed for two months and given a five-year ban from keeping animals over his treatment of one-year-old border collie Glenn.

SSPCA inspectors were called to a property over concerns the 31-year-old had not taken Glenn to a vet for wounds inflicted by another dog.

Glenn was then found with an elastic band wrapped so tightly around his head and throat that it had become embedded in the wounds and infected.

When confronted over the horrific wounds, Hunter tried to claim he was unaware that Glenn had any injuries whatsoever.

Scottish SPCA inspector Jack Marshall said: “When we attended the wounds on Glenn’s head were immediately visible.

"Hunter was vague about when the wounds had occurred, initially claiming the incident happened the day before our visit and then a few days before.

“The vet estimated it’s likely Glenn had been left in this state for closer to two weeks due to the extent of the damage caused by the elastic band and the infection that was present."

Shock pictures showed the extent of Glen's injuries, with a large, deep gash visible around his earline.

Glenn finally received the veterinary attention he desperately needed and was rehomed some weeks later after his wounds healed.

Hunter was charged with failing to seek veterinary treatment and was sentenced to two months in prison while being banned from keeping animals for five years.

“Hunter later claimed he was unaware that his dog had any injury until we visited. The wounds were clearly visible on Glenn’s head and any reasonable owner would have been aware that he needed medical attention.

“We are still unclear how or why the elastic band came to be on his head at all.”

“We’re glad that Hunter has received a prison sentence and a ban on keeping animals for five years.

“We hope he seriously reconsiders his ability to care for any animal in future.
