Eland Oil & Gas founder joins US oil explorer Vaalco

The former boss of Aberdeen-based Eland Oil & Gas has joined the board of West Africa-focussed US oil explorer Vaalco Energy as an independent director.

George Maxwell resigned as Eland's chief executive in December 2019 after the firm was taken over by Nigerian producer Seplat.

The Robert Gordon University MBA graduate has lengthy experience of oil exploration in Nigeria, having worked there with ABB Oil & Gas and Addax Petroleum before he founded Eland in 2009. he was chief financial officer when Eland floated on the London Stock Exchange in 2012.

Maxwell will sit on Vaalco's Audit, Compensation, and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees, chairing the Compensation Committee. 

Houston-based Vaalco, which has production, development and exploration assets in West Africa, has also added Catherine Stubbs as an independent director and Bradley Radoff to its board.

VAALCO, founded in 1985, is a Houston, USA based, independent energy company with.

Vaalco chairman Andrew Fawthrop said: "We believe that Catherine, George and Brad will bring significant experience in the offshore and international energy sector that will help support VAALCO in achieving our strategic goals.

"In addition, the two new members will refresh the Board of Directors and bring in diverse perspectives."
