'El Quitavisas' Trend Emerges on Social Media After U.S. Revokes Visas of Foreigners Who Celebrated Charlie Kirk's Murder

The U.S. Department of State confirmed this week that it revoked the visas of six foreign nationals who publicly celebrated the murder of conservative commentator and Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk in Utah.

In a statement released on its official X account, the State Department said, "The United States has no obligation to host foreigners who wish death upon Americans." The agency added that it "will continue identifying visa holders who celebrated the heinous murder of Charlie Kirk," noting that such individuals "are not welcome in the United States."

The move, which the agency framed as a matter of national principle, has since sparked a viral online trend centered around the nickname "El Quitavisas" — "the Visa Remover." The origins of the trend go back several weeks when Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau posted an image parodying the Batman signal — this time with the U.S. eagle emblem and the phrase "El Quitavisas."

His post was a reference to the department's recent decision to revoke the diplomatic visa of Colombian President Gustavo Petro following remarks he made in New York urging U.S. soldiers to "disobey Trump's orders."

Social media users turned the "El Quitavisas" moniker viral on Tuesday to describe the U.S. government's new assertive approach to visa revocations.

Among those affected by the DHS decision on Tuesday was Serena Luciano, an Argentine student living in Chicago, who wrote on Facebook that Kirk "dedicated his life to spreading racist, xenophobic, and misogynistic rhetoric" and "deserves to burn in hell." Her post drew attention from conservative circles and U.S. officials, leading to the revocation of her student visa, as La Tercera explains.

Other individuals sanctioned include citizens of South Africa, Germany, Brazil, Paraguay, and Mexico. According to the State Department, their posts mocked Kirk's death or justified it on ideological grounds.
