The suspect in the mass shooting that left 22 people dead at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, last month has been indicted on capital murder charges.
A grand jury in El Paso, Texas, formally indicted Patrick Crusius, 21, "for Capital Murder in relation to the shooting deaths of twenty-two individuals at the Cielo Vista Walmart on August 3, 2019," according to a press release provided to the New York Daily News.
If found guilty, Crusius faces "death or life imprisonment without parole," said the release, provided by a spokeswoman for the El Paso County District Attorney's Office.
District Attorney Jaime Esparza is planning to seek the death penalty.
"For those who suffered injuries, they will be used in the punishment phase," but not the indictment phase, the spokeswoman told The News.
The documentation won't be available to the public until the indictment is filed by the District Clerk's Office. That office has 10 days to do complete the filing.
On Aug. 3, a gunman prosecutors identify as Crusius entered the El Paso Walmart and opened fire, killing 22 individuals and wounding dozens more.
A manifesto full of anti-immigrant and anti-Hispanic rhetoric was posted 20 minutes before the attack and is thought to be linked to the gunman.
