El Paso shooting – live: Hospitals appeal for blood donors as Trump responds to 'terrible' attack

Multiple people have been killed and at least 22 have been injured in a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas.

Police officers several were injured after the rampage at the Cielo Vista Mall.

Police said one suspect – a white man in his twenties – was in custody. Officers ruled out the possibility of multiple shooters.

A number of people have been shot and killed at the Cielo Vista Mall in El Paso, Texas.
 
Police officers said one suspect was in custody.
 
Residents are advised to stay away from the scene.
President Trump has been briefed about the shooting.
 
"The president has been briefed on the shooting in El Paso, and we continue to monitor the situation. The president has spoken with Attorney General Barr and Governor Abbott," Steven Groves, the White House Deputy Press Secretary said.
 
Later the president responded on Twitter.
 
"Terrible shootings in ElPaso, Texas. Reports are very bad, many killed," he said on Twitter. 
 
"Working with State and Local authorities, and Law Enforcement. Spoke to Governor to pledge total support of Federal Government. God be with you all!"

Presidential candidate and former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke appeared shaken as he appeared at a candidate forum in Las Vegas on Saturday shortly after news of the shooting in his hometown was reported.

Mr O'Rourke said he had called his wife before taking the stage and said the shooting shatters "any illusion that we have that progress is inevitable" on tackling gun violence.

The Democrat said he had heard early reports the shooter might have had a military-style weapon, saying we need to "keep that (expletive) on the battlefield and do not bring it into our communities."

"We have to find some reason for optimism and hope or else we consign ourselves to a future where nearly 40,000 people are year will lose their lives to gun violence and I cannot accept that," Mr O'Rourke said.

Authorities believe the El Paso attack was carried out by a single gunman who is in custody.
 
Officials ruled out earlier reports of multiple shooters.
 
Mass shootings are typically followed by the spread of inaccurate information. What we know so far, is that multiple people were shot and several killed. The El Paso police department has not announced specific numbers.

State Rep. Cesar Blanco said on MSNBC that he had received reports that at least 18 people had been shot. 

NBC News reports that a University Medical Center of El Paso official said it had received at least 10 seriously injured victims and that victims had also been taken to other hospitals.
John Cornyn, the senior senator for Texas has responded to the shooting on Twitter.

Reports in US media outlets suggest that the shooter attacked customers in the mall's Walmart store.
 
The company has now responded, saying that it is 'working closely with law enforcement'.
 
The Cielo Vista Mall is spread over a large site near Interstate 10 on east side of El Paso.
 
There are people searching for family members near the scene. Police have set up a reunification centre for families at McCarthur Middle School on Whittus.

Photos are emerging of the scene in El Paso, where survivors are exiting the mall with their hands in the air.
El Paso police Sergeant Robert Gomez has said the gunman appears to have used a rifle, according to initial reports.
 
Many of those caught up in the rampage are believed to have been buying back-to-school supplies.
 
Police, state troopers, Homeland Security agents and border patrol officers are at the scene.
 
Shoppers have emerged from the mall, with police officers instructing them to put their hands in the air to show they are unarmed.
El Paso's police department is appealing urgently for blood to be donated following the shooting.
 
"Blood needed urgently. Multiple injured transported to various hospitals. Blood donation centers Vitalent Blood Services at 424 s Mesa Hills and 133 N Zaragoza," the force tweeted.
 
University Medical Center of El Paso has received 13 patients, including some who died, said a spokesperson.
 
Two of the patients who arrived at the hospital were children who were transferred to El Paso Children's Hospital, he said.

The conditions of the 13 patients ranged from deceased to minor injuries, he said.

He could not immediately provide a figure on how many had died.

2 children, aged two and nine, are being treated at the El Paso Children's Hospital following the shooting, according to a hospital spokesperson.
A University Medical Center of El Paso official says one of 12 people who were rushed to the hospital after the attack on a shopping complex has died. 

A spokesperson said all 12 suffered traumatic injuries in Saturday's attack.
 
 He declined to provide additional details about the victims, including the one who died. 

The spokesperson said two children, ages two and nine, were stabilised at the medical center before being transferred to the neighboring El Paso Children's Hospital.

El Paso hospitals are treating 22 shooting victims, not counting at least one person who died during treatment.
More information is emerging about the 22 people injured and where they are being treated.
 
The Del Sol Medical Center is treating 11 patients, the University Medical Center of El Paso is treating nine, the El Paso Children's Hospital is treating two. Police officers are urgently asking for blood donations from people in the area. 
 
At least one person, not counted in the 22, has died during treatment.
 
A police spokesperson has said officers have detained a white male suspect in his twenties following the shooting.
 
Officers have secured the mall and the Walmart store where the shooting took place.
 
Robert Gomez said people in the Walmart were shopping for back to school supplies.
 
The mall has been cleared and the area is still in lockdown, according to police.
 
Mr Gomez said there did not appear to be a further threat to the public.
 
He said he believed most people who were shot were injured at the Walmart store.
Joe Biden has reacted to news of the mass shooting.
 
"How many lives must be cut short? How many communities must be torn apart?" the former Vice President tweeted.
 
"It’s past time we take action and end our gun violence epidemic."
 
A debate about gun control is flaring online after the attack, as with every US mass shooting.
 
Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator and presidential primary candidate, has called for further regulation.
 
"The US House has passed common sense gun safety legislation. It is long past time to pass it in the Senate," she said. 
 
"The question to ask: Whose side are you on? The NRA’s or the people’s."
 
There is a huge amount of speculation about the gunman's identity and motives but police officers have confirmed few details about the suspect.
 
A police spokesperson refused to name the suspect, a white man in his twenties. He also refused to speculate as to the motive for the attack.
 
He said the gunman used some type of rifle.
