Fans have donated $45,100 (£24,500) to fund El-P and Killer Mike’s Run the Jewels 2 cat-remix album, Meow the Jewels.
After the two MCs jovially suggested they’d re-record Run the Jewels 2 using solely cat sounds, a Kickstarter campaign was launched in September and to date it has soared above its target, with over a week to go.
News of the album has also piqued the attention of a number of musicians who want to get involved. According to El-P, Zola Jesus, Baauer, Portishead’s Geoff Barrow, producer and musician Boots and Dan the Automator are all on board for the release. A spokesperson for the MCs also says that El-P has started auditioning cats.
According to the page, a large portion of the proceeds will be donated to victims of police brutality and a smaller portion to neglected animals.
Run the Jewels 2 will be released as a free download on 27 October. It finds space for guests ranging from Zack de la Rocha to Travis Barker and follows 2013’s debut, Run the Jewels, which also came out as a free digital download.
