April 29--Due to the weather forecast that calls for rain and strong winds, the annual El Dia de los Ninos Celebration scheduled for Saturday in Aurora has been postponed until the following weekend.
For the safety of participants and after consulting with Aurora's Emergency Management Team, the city of Aurora Hispanic Heritage Advisory Board has rescheduled the event for 1 to 5 p.m. May 7, according to city officials. The fest will still be at the Aurora Transportation Center Lot at Spring Street and Lincoln Avenue in downtown Aurora.
The traditional Latin American event recognizes children and pays homage to their importance in society, city officials said. The free celebration is being held in partnership with the Aurora Public Library, West Aurora School District 129, East Aurora School District 131, Oswego School District 308 and Indian Prairie School District 204.
This year's theme will be Promoting Science and all school districts have contributed funding to support the distribution of over 5,000 books to children who visit literacy stations staffed by volunteer teachers at the festival.
Activities at the event will include stage performances by the West Aurora and East Aurora Children's Choirs, singers from Oswego School District and Indian Prairie School District, Ballet Folklorico Quetzalcoatl, Simply Destinee Dance Team, Aztec Dance Troupe, and Los Tiliches del Baul Puppet Company from Guanajuato, Mexico.
Other organizations providing free children's activities include SciTech Hands On Museum, the Aurora Police Department, the Aurora Fire Department, Sonos de Mexico, and the Fox Valley Orchestra. A rock wall sponsored by the Three Fires Council Boy Scouts of America and several bounce houses and inflatable obstacle courses will be onsite for the children, city officials said.
