Ghanan-born, Nigerian-based artist El Anatsui will exhibit Five Decades, an installation that explores the complex histories of post-colonial Africa and the issues of consumption, waste and the environment.
Fresh from winning the Gold Lion at the 2015 Venice Biennale, he will bring his first major exhibition in Australia, which spans his own practice from 1970 until now. Many of his works are made from recycled materials including aluminium printing plates, tin boxes and liquor bottle caps, as one of his practices is transforming matter. Unlike most sculptures, Anatsui’s are often wall-based. He works more like a “sculpture and a painter put together”.
