EKU to observe Earth Week with hike, tree-planting and fair

Eastern Kentucky University has several events planned this week related to Earth Day, which is Saturday, April 22. Rachelanne Knoll, EKU’s sustainability manager, said the first takes place Tuesday.

“We are doing a hike at Taylor Fork ecological area, which is ran by a couple different departments. It's on campus, really pretty, has some hiking trails.”

Thursday, they’ll hold their annual Arbor Day Earth Day service event.

“We have a certification through the Arbor Day Foundation called Tree Campus USA. And to keep that certification, we have to do a outreach event service bit every year. So for that, we usually plant and mulch some trees on a specific area of campus.”

Knoll said this year, they’ll be planting and mulching around the ravine, near Sullivan Hall. Friday, there’ll be an Earth Day Fair at Powell Plaza, near the student center, with booths, water bottles, t-shirts, hoodies and other prizes.
