EKU's Alumni Coliseum renovation timeline modified to not impact play this season

A significant transformation is planned inside Eastern Kentucky University’s Alumni Coliseum. The timeline for the capital construction project has been modified.

The original plan for an extensive renovation of the facility called for work to begin last March and meant no home competition the upcoming season. But, EKU Athletics Director Matt Roan said that timeline was stretched so work in the gym area won’t start until next spring.

“When you start looking at disrupting an entire season and trying to find a home away from home, whether it be in the service region or even be here on campus, logically and financially that provided a lot of challenges,” said Roan.

Roan noted the modified timeline has competition in Alumni Coliseum resuming in January of 2025. The A-D added the $30 plus million project covers a wide variety of improvements including new seating options and orientation plus lighting, and sound system upgrades.

“Making sure that we’re positively impacting the student-athlete experience, the fan experience…that we’re able to put some things in there that help us create revenue to support athletics and our programs,” said Roan.

Roan said Alumni Coliseum will remain a multi-use facility to host student orientations and commencement ceremonies. Roan noted the iconic roof and ceiling will not be altered. The head of athletics added the stretching of the timeline will only be about three months in duration.
