EKU president: Federal student loan forgiveness plan could benefit many graduates

President Biden’s executive order to forgive student loans has been temporarily blocked by the U.S. Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. This plan, should it be allowed to proceed, could impact some students and alumni of Eastern Kentucky University.

In an interview with WEKU, university president David McFaddin said, considering the students who come to EKU, Biden’s plan could be a popular one.

“Yeah, I think when we look at look at the sheer number of students that we serve, first gen, low-income populations, there’s a lot of our graduates who are probably going to participate in this program.”

McFaddin told WEKU that he commends the plan’s efforts to try to lower the impact of college on families’ budgets.

“The signal that college is affordable, that college could be something that is possible and the use of loans, when we look at EKU, about 58% of our students at some point in time during their journey here, undergraduate students use a federal loan program to help finish their degree.”

McFaddin says over 60% are first generation and or full, low-income, pell eligible students and 40% of the student body is the first in their family to go to college.
