Ekow Essuman secures British and Commonwealth titles with Chris Jenkins stoppage

Ekow Essuman is the new Commonwealth and British welterweight champion after stopping Chris Jenkins at the SSE Arena.

The Nottingham fighter, who is dubbed the Engine, unleashed a burst of punches in the eighth round that Jenkins had no answer to.

And the referee had seen enough as Jenkins hoovered up blow after blow as Essuman secured the victory.

Essuman, speaking to BT Sport, said: "My coach told me to take my time going into the first few rounds, keep everything nice and sharp and just box.

"Heading into the third round, my coach said every time you hit him with hard shots you're hurting him and he wanted me to step it up a little bit.

"In the next round, he said let your right hand go and, after that, he said just put it on him.

"I wasn't sure he was ready for war - and he wasn't.

"I hit him with a good headshot in the second or third round, but I also hit him with a body shot and I heard him let out some air.

"I knew the body shots were hurting him.

"I always said when I was boxing for Team GB that the cream always rises to the top.

"It was only a matter of time. I had to work my way up to the English title, I beat Tyrone Nurse the former British champ.

"I've waited for my chance. I knew this opportunity would come and I said I would take it with both hands and here I am.

Essuman becomes the second British and Commonwealth title champion in Nottingham with Leigh Wood, who is fighting for a world title next week, holding the featherweight version of the belts.

There is now a hope that big-time boxing can return to the city on a regular basis with Essuman and Wood both flying the flag for the city.

And one fight that would garner a huge amount of interest is Essuman against Conor Benn, the son of former world middleweight champion Nigel.

Essuman, who has an excellent pedigree as an amateur, has warned that he is gunning for Benn who is catching the eye with his own performances

And asked who he wanted to fight next, Essuman said: "Who do the public want the most?

"That's my question. It's all right me saying his name and I know the public want the fight.

"If they call for it then it might happen. He (Conor) will be wanting to come for me.

"I've got the British and he wanted it. I've got it, come get it if you can baby."
