EK woman avoids prison after shouting abuse and ignoring social distancing rules

An East Kilbride shopper who ignored social distance rules then hurled abuse at staff has avoided prison.

Jamie Lee Mathers, 30, of North Berwick Crescent, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

She admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at Spar in Westwood Square earlier this year.

Jennifer Cunningham, prosecuting, said Mathers and another person went into the shop at 7am.

Ms Cunningham told the court: “One of the employees asked the accused to abide by social distancing guidelines and was met by a barrage of abuse.

“Mathers was then asked to leave the shop and continued to shout and swear at the staff.”

Mathers admitted an unrelated shoplifting charge involving clothing worth £72 that was recovered.

She also admitted threatening or abusive behaviour and police assault at her home in the early hours of January 22.

Officers were called to the house regarding a noise complaint at 4.45am.

The fiscal stated: “They spoke to the accused who started to shout and swear at them.

“She was advised that she was being arrested and continued to act in a highly aggressive manner.

“She made threats towards the officers and tried to headbutt one of them.”

Mathers admitted previous convictions and Sheriff Daniel Kelly noted she had served jail sentences.

But, after studying a criminal justice social work report and hearing from lawyer Diarmid Bruce, the sheriff decided to impose an alternative this time.

Mathers will be under supervision for a year and must carry out 100 hours of unpaid community work.
