EK thug awaits sentence following shocking attack on bouncer outside Irish bar

An East Kilbride thug fractured a bouncer’s nose and eye socket after being refused entry to a pub.

Martin Friel pounced on Scott Fraser outside Grace’s Irish Bar in Glasgow’s Merchant City in December 2018.

Friel repeatedly punched the 39 year-old who remains affected by the attack.

The 35 year-old pled guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday to assaulting the bouncer to his severe injury and permanent impairment.

Friel was bailed pending sentencing next month.

A hearing was told Friel had left the pub - popular with Celtic fans - to have a cigarette.

Prosecutor Lauren Staunton said: “He told the bouncer he thought people were taking drugs in the toilets.

“He told Mr Fraser he was not doing anything to tackle the problem in the toilet. Friel was then told he was not getting back in.”

The attacker initially punched the door steward on the head before a struggle where both men fell to the ground.

Miss Staunton added: “Friel continued to punch Mr Fraser to the head and face.”

Friel was arrested after a 999 call was made, with his victim treated at hospital for his injuries.

The court was told he “continues to experience numbness to his cheek”.

He also pulled a muscle in his right leg as a result of the incident.

Sheriff Andrew Cubie deferred sentencing for reports.
