EK teacher sets monster record at 66-mile road race around Loch Ness

A teacher got on her bike and set a new 'monster' course record at a gruelling 66-mile road race.

The sportive cycling event around the iconic Loch Ness was postponed three times from April 2020 due to the ongoing COVID pandemic.

But Catriona Lockie, from East Kilbride, broke the female course record, completing it in 2hrs 54m 59s.

She also picked up the Queen of the Mountain title, completing a 4.8 mile climb reaching 380 metres in 24m 39s.

Over 4000 cyclists signed up for the event this year - among them being boyfriend, Andrew Tait, and her dad, Gordon.

They didn't quite reach the heights of amateur cyclist, Catriona, from Hairmyres - but it was her dad who inspired her to take up cycling in the first place.

"Dad and Andrew were competing too, so it was a bit of a family day out as well with my mum cheering us all on from the side lines," Catriona, 29, told Lanarkshire Live.

"Whilst my dad has never cycled competitively, he has always done it more for fun and to keep fit, he got me into it a couple of years ago.

"Sadly, Andrew got a puncture 10 miles in. He did get himself sorted and keep going but by that time a lot of folk were long gone."

The event around some of the country's most stunning scenery has raised over £50,000 for charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support so far.

Catriona previously took part in the race in 2019 finishing the 15th female then.

She went on: "I only really started taking cycling seriously a few years ago and I really wanted to improve on my time from 2019.

"It was an honour to be taking part and as well as improving my time deep down I knew I really wanted to win or come top three or five at very least.

"But I knew if I wanted to do that I would have to cycle faster than I have even done before - races like this are never easy.

"There was a steep hill and I managed to break away from two or three other cyclists.

"By the time I got to the top of the hill I had opened up a gap and then for the last 25 miles or so, I just kept pedalling as fast and hard as I could. I don't think I expected to set a new course record though, I was absolutely delighted."

Catriona, who teaches RMPS in Stewarton Academy after having worked on Arran for a number of years, cycles every Saturday morning with group in East Kilbride and also depending on work commitments, during the week too.

"I spend a lot of my life either working or on my bike," she added. "I am out a lot and the weekends and when I can after work, so it's a big commitment.

"The EK group I cycle with on Saturday mornings do long distances, and are a really quick group, which was ideal for preparing for Loch Ness."

And Malcolm Sutherland, event director of Etape Loch Ness, said: “Congratulations to everyone who took part in the Etape Loch Ness 2021. We have loved seeing people back on this beautiful course around Loch Ness, doing something they love with fellow cycling enthusiasts.

“Not only has it brought people together for the first time in a long time, but it has raised important funds for charities, including over £50,000 so far for our official charity, Macmillan Cancer Support."

And Catriona's successes have continued with she and her Glasgow-based team - Travelo - winning the Scottish team time trial championships which were held in Forfar recently.

It was her first ever official road race, with the Loch Ness event not officially counting, and it was a close-fought battle in the end with Catriona's team winning by just 12 seconds.
