EK Chinese takeaway loved by generations turns off woks for last time

A much-loved Chinese takeaway which opened its doors in 1976, has served its final meal.

The Marlboro in Westwood has been a favourite haunt for many in East Kilbride, with customers past and present inundating Facebook with well-wishes after it shut its doors last night (Thursday).

Leo Au-Yeung, whose family ran the takeaway, posted on an EK Facebook page: "That’s a rap, Marlboro is now closed.

"Thank you for everyone who has used our service. Farewell for now, we may be back one day and, for a last post, if someone wants a Marlboro curry sauce stained pot highest bidder gets it!"

Leo posted this week that they had been extremely busy in the run up to the last day of service and added "once again thanks everyone for the cards and chocolate; pretty sure the whole family will be diabetic soon."

Leo's dad, Stevie, passed away at the end of last year with the family receiving condolences from across the town, and his mum has now retired.

Loyal customers from as far back as the 70s wished Leo and the rest of his family well in their future endeavours.

One posted: "Tasted my first curry from here around 76...and the last one last week. God knows how many I've had over the years....always my place to go. Best wishes. You will be missed."

Another wrote: "Will really miss you - best Chinese takeaway ever. Wishing you all the very best whatever you do next and thank you for serving Westwood residents so well."

And one woman went on: "You will be very much missed by those of us who have had our weekly curry treat meal from you and introduced our children and grandchildren to the famous Marlboro curries."

A fan of the eatery said: "No we want the recipe Leo.... gutted. I miss the restaurant days, when you dad and grandad worked there...sad times."

And speaking about the last night another added: "Hope the craziness of tonight showed how much you will be missed.

"Hope your mum has a long and happy retirement. And you and Jordan find something you enjoy but if not Marlboro two is always welcome."
