Billie Eilish and Amanda Gorman are among the list of stars set to headline at the Met Gala this September.
The relatively intimate event, which will feature a heavy-hitting contingent of celebrity co-chairs, will take place on September 18 followed by a larger event in May 2022.
Delayed from its usual May date because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year’s red carpet event will celebrate 75th anniversary of the New York museum’s Costume Institute.
Both events will launch a two-part exhibition, a survey of American fashion, which will be on view for almost a year.
The September event will feature Actor Timothée Chalamet, musician Billie Eilish, poet Amanda Gorman and tennis star Naomi Osaka.
While honorary chairs for the evening will be designer Tom Ford, sponsor Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Vogue’s Anna Wintour.
The first show, which is titled ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion,’ will focus heavily on contemporary designers.
The second, ‘In America: An Anthology of Fashion,’ will open – as is tradition – on the first Monday of May in 2022 and will celebrate 300 years of American Fashion history.
Both exhibitions will close on September 5 2022.
Grammy award-winning filmmaker Melina Matsoukas, who worked on Queen & Slim, has been commissioned to create an open-ended film to project in the galleries.
Cinematographer Bradford Young, whose projects have included “Selma” and “When They See Us,’ is also collaborating with the Institute for the event.
In a video preview published on Monday, star curator Andrew Bolton spoke about the challenges the fashion community had experienced throughout the pandemic.
“It’s been incredibly inspiring to see how designers have responded to the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, how they’ve found new outlets to express their creativity and new ways to present their collections,” he said.
The gala, which was canceled last year, is a major fundraiser, providing the Costume Institute with its primary source of funding.
