Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced strict new measures during a televised address to the nation last night, in an attempt to quell the spread of coronavirus.

In the announcement he ordered people to only leave their homes under a list of "very limited purposes", banned public gatherings of more than two people and ordered the closure of non-essential shops.

Individual forms of exercise such as running, walking or cycling have bee limited to once a day and they must be done either alone or with other household members.

Anyone caught flouting the rules will face police action, through fines and the dispersing of gatherings.

The Prime Minister made the drastic decision following mounting criticism that the government's more relaxed approach was setting it on course to suffer a similar fate to Italy, the epicentre of the pandemic where more than 6,000 people have died.
