Eighty jobs lost before Christmas as Fitzwilliam Card Club announces closure

The Fitzwilliam Card Club is to close immediately leaving 80 people without jobs ten days before Christmas.

The club, which has been open for 16 years, has pointed the finger at the threat by the new Gaming and Lotteries (Amendment) Act 2019.

A spokesman said: "It is with great sadness and regret that we make this announcement today,

"Understandably, our concentrations will now be with our staff to ensure that they are appropriately catered for, particularly at this time of year.

"We would like to thank all of our staff for their commitment and hard work over the past 16 years.

"We sought to engage with the Government and opposition regarding the threat posed by the legislation to our business,

"Sadly, our pleas fell on deaf ears and an amendment was not granted to safeguard the business and our 80 employees".

The popular club went on to say that under the new legislation it won't be able to get a "gaming permit" or "gaming licence" which will be required.

A gaming permit only allows games where the player and banker have an equal chance of winning while a licence only allows holders to run slot machines with a maximum win of €5 and payout of €500.

The club reassured staff saying it will honour their obligations such as leave and redundancy while members deposits and chips will be honoured.
