Eight Wigan schools hit by Covid cases since pupils returned from Easter break

Eight schools in Wigan have had positive Covid cases since pupils returned from the Easter break.

While infection rates are falling, cases are still having an impact on schools, with close contacts having to isolate.

Wigan council is the only local authority in Greater Manchester to publish a weekly surveillance tracker, showing which schools have been affected, so it's unclear how cases are impacting on other schools across the region.

This week's tracker shows that between April 21 and 28, cases were confirmed at the following schools:

  • Bedford Hall Methodist Primary
  • Sacred Heart RC Primary, Leigh
  • St Paul's CE Primary, Westleigh
  • St Richard's RC Primary, Atherton
  • Byrchall High School
  • Fred Longworth High School
  • Hawkley Hall High School
  • The Westleigh School

While most schools are still sending home close contacts of any positive cases, 200 secondary schools and colleges across the country - including Westhoughton High School - are taking part in a trial where pupils can opt for daily testing in school instead.

It means that if they agree to be tested for Covid daily for seven consecutive school days, they can remain in school, but still have to isolate when they're at home.

Many teachers and parents support the idea, hoping it will bring an end to the disruption that many pupils have faced with time spent out of the classroom.

Others say daily testing is 'too much' for youngsters and have questioned the sense in children being allowed in school, but still having to isolate at home - especially when they'd still have to travel to and from their setting and potentially mix with others outside their usual bubble.
