Eight-week-old endangered red panda pictured for first time at zoo

An eight-week-old endangered red panda has been pictured for the first time as zookeepers celebrate the latest success of their conservation project.

The tiny kit, which has not yet been named, was born at Edinburgh Zoo on July 10 to mum Ginger and dad Bruce.

It will receive its first health checks in the coming weeks, remaining in the cubbing den until it develops independence from its parents.

It is hoped visitors will be able to spot the youngster when it begins to explore the outdoor enclosure in the months ahead.

Posting on Twitter, Edinburgh Zoo said: "Say hello to our tiny red panda kit.

"Born in July to Ginger + Bruce, we hope you'll start to spot the kit over the coming months as they begin to explore the outdoor enclosure, funded by @PostcodeLottery players".

The birth of the new kit brings the total number of red pandas at Edinburgh Zoo to three, with Bruce having arrived in 2016 and Ginger in 2017.

Red pandas are native to the eastern Himalayas, primarily herbivorous and grow to around two feet (61cm) in length – slightly larger than a domestic cat – according to the WWF.

Under threat from poaching and habitat loss, they are classified as endangered with fewer than 10,000 individuals left.
